Lore question from an uninitiated

I have absolutely no context on the lore of Deep Rock Galactic, my apologies, but I have some questions.

Are Dwarves in this universe the effect of us going out into space or something?

The reason I'm asking is the oft repeated statement, 'The scanner just lit up like a Christmas tree!'

I have so many questions from this single statement. Have we co-existed with dwarves long enough for not only such vernacular, but customs to mingle together? Or is this just a world of dwarves, and there was some dwarvish Jesus who died for all our sins and made beer out of water and whatnot?

Danger and darkness awaits my friend, besides that just dwarfs and bugs. In Deep Rock Galactic the Mission Control leader also says 'The scanner just lit up like a Christmas Tree, meaning he spots a large number of bugs...

the dwarves knows what a christmas tree is because dwarves are under us...they are real.
just look at those small people every where looking like what you know as "childs" .
That arent "childs" ... that are Dwarfes covered as childs ;D

Supposedly there are Elves, which are frowned upon.

Devs have hinted at Rival Factions, the mechanical constructs in Vanilla DRG, are made by Gnomes.

There really hasnt been too much lore out there outside of player made.

I Myself am hoping DRG: Rogue Core expands on the cannon of the universe.

It's like dnd. Human, elfs, dwarf in space. Our dwarf are exploited by a megacorp. It's implied that the board of deep rock might be human or elfs. Karl is a legendary dwarf that has killed the queens of aliens and died. That's about it for the lore really.
