Can anyone explain how life regen works in DRG:S?

I've been levelling it up a bunch and if I'm being honest I'm not seeing the effects much. I've seen people theorize that it boosts red sugar healing, or that it DOES heal in increments but said increments are like every 5 to 10 seconds. Can anyone offer some definitive clarity on the subject or are we all in the dark on this?

It works quite oddly. There was a thread about in on Reddit, can't remember the link right now but in a nutshell: the less HP you have, the faster you regenerate.

Oh ok. I guess it makes sense, but I get really annoyed when games just throw stats in your face and never tells you a damn thing about how they work. Thanks :)
