This is the type of game you turn your brain off for and it attempts to subvert that by making you choose to make trades to get nodes, position exploders to blow enemies up, weigh stats and weapons like you're theorycrafting an MMO, and it's not really working at that. You get to the point where all those things stop requiring brain power. It's mostly just a hurdle to get game knowledge that isn't told to you explicitly and then get some unlocks.
You know what would be great? If the upgrade tooltip just did the math for me and showed the total DPS gain of each option (other than Piercing / AOE effects). Is anyone going to whip out a calculator? Nah.
"But if it did the math for you then why pick the other options?"
Exactly, why do you want me to do math or randomly pick the wrong choice? Why hide that information from the player? "Mystery"? You want players to make choices then make them matter.
This isn't Slay the Spire level of thinking 1000 steps ahead. This is like... Brotato with an obstacle course.
It can also be useful when you run away from the horde of enemies that it kills the enemies in front of you so you get a clear path to run.
I haven't played too much yet, beat hazard 1 easily (beat it on first run as scout). Haven't beat hazard 2 yet because I only tried it once and I got over confident and accidentally died. Unlocked the main classes and played a few games of hazard 1.
So far I think the best class is driller because the 70% increased mining speed is extremely good to get more loot and to make more room to kite and faster dig through walls when cornered. It also has great AoE and I had one gun that almost 1 shot a boss.
But the last game I played gunner and absolutely destroyed everything with minigun. Had no other gun upgraded so couldn't get upgrades for other guns so it was all minigun that did the work and I could run full speed toward waves and they died before I could reach them.
It is also possible to angle yourself so you dig toward the enemy so you get to shoot while digging, doesn't work perfect but it helps a little.
That said, it really shines when you have the right upgrades. Unlock Overclocks for it, and rush getting the Overclock that gives it piercing. Also, take every damage up upgrade you can, don't worry too much about fire rate/reload. You should be running/using other weapons to cover yourself while reloading.
Also, crucial tip: You can gently tap backwards to make the Minigun fire behind you while mining. This lets you mine while keeping your flank completely safe. Extremely useful in the early game when you have no other weapons, and need to mine currencies.

scout classic and scout recon are weak.
driller foreman weapon shoot behind also too bad.
The first seven runs I used the Leadstorm and brought it to max, I never got the Piercing OC.
I loathed that thing. Now I had two runs with the Piercing OC and it's kinda aight, but still one of my least fave weapons in the game. (Doesn't help that most my runs with it were kinda cursed. Even on one of em with piercing, I took two artifacts that are bugged in combo right now, instantly bringing you to -40% Movespeed. It is literally impossible to dodge the dread jump with -40)
I have had really good runs where the leadstorm just melts waves as I run in a circle or when I make a choke point and face it or when the Juggernaut jumps and lands behind me and i turn and fire on it for a few seconds before putting some distance and dodging again
but like every other weapon I've had runs where they were completely useless
