In short, the fact that you can only attack in the direction you're facing with that weapon is part of how it is balanced compared to others. If you want to kite effectively you probably want some other weapon to complement it as your second choice and not another big dps weapon.
But also:
Because it's not a twin-stick shooter , there's ALOT of confusion on this for some reason.

Video I made with a short explanation if you wanna watch.
And that's fine but just because it doesn't "fit your style" doesn't make it bad.
That's a "you problem" and nothing more.
Second person I tried to help that was just rude.
I'm out not worth it
So after playing the game a bit, i still think mouse aim should be an option, but not so much so that you can run forward and while facing backwards to shoot, but more of a mouse to control directional walking.
The game seems to have been optimised specificaly for controller controls where the joystick has 360 degrees of control. Where as if you play with keyboard you only have options, up down left right, and diagonals. Especially for this game where you shoot in the direction you aim, (even though the shooting is more at a angle of a cone. )
you can aim several weapons in Vampire Survivors
Here there is no option to do it.
