Overclock Unlock system needs a complete overhaul
Usually I'd try to be a little more nuanced, but I think the unlock system for overclocks is just TERRIBLE.

Currently, you have to do 20+ runs where you pour the majority of your level ups into a useless weapon - because it doesn't have overclocks yet - that will ultimately do nothing on that run - because it still won't have overclocks.

This would be less of a problem if the game wasn't balanced around having overclocks unlocked.

It's definitely one way to get people to hit 2 hours played so they can't refund.

Its a single run. I usually choose to dedicate a single run to a weapon and a few resources. Take any and every upgrade, including cosmetics, and get it to 12. Grab some resources, and done. Once it gets to 12, either stay still and let the bugs come, or try and push. Either way, its a single run per weapon, at most.

I've already run more dives than there are weapons in the game, I could have possibly gotten every weapon unlocked. I'm just trying other things first.

20+ runs is perhaps a bit of an over-exaggeration considering I haven't even done 20 runs and I have several weapons with Overclock, sometimes unlocking 3 in a single run.

i really like the system

I agree that it feels unnecessary to unlock overclocks on every weapon. I understand needing to unlock it once as a tutorial / onboarding situation, but once you've gotten any weapon to level 12 it should unlock overclocks for every weapon.

One alternative would be that when you reach level 12 it not only unlocks overclocks for future runs, but instantly give you a list of 4 Overclock options, getting to pick 2.

It would give you immediate and synergistic power boosts for the weapon, making getting it to level 12 worthwhile for that specific run.

Yup! There are tons of design solutions to these unlocks that respect the players time.

I honestly think removing the unlock system completely would be a huge improvement, or rework Overclock unlocks to give you NEW overclocks, not just gating access to them in the first place.

Could also lower the overclock unlock requirement to 6, 8 or 10 to make it (!) less RNG that a dedicated run for unlocks will succeed/fail and (2) let players doing well have a chance at unlocking multiple overclocks in the same run.

Having to unlock overclocks is just another of those artificial gates to pad out the game length with grind. No idea what designer thought that "2 runs, but one is wasted" would be more fun than a one properly good run, but they were wrong about that one.

Agreed. Overclocking is the thing that is making me consider just shelfing the game indefinitely. You should not have to unlock it for every weapon individually. Maybe have every weapon you level to 12 give you a minor xp boost or something.

I'm sure this system was one of the things that players dislike in demo for a fair reason. After few months it's still here and I has no clue why it's still here.

Instead of unlocking overclocks itself (new overclocks for specific weapon), you unlock ability to use overclocks. Why?

How about this the game gives the reject overclock mod option that gives a bonus epic upgrade.

It wouldn't be so bad if once you reach level 12 you get one overclock. Just a taste of things to come. Also the lack of exp sucks. I've only been able to unlock 2 weapons during a run. There's not enough exp to have fun weapons or bland unlock weapons.

I had a couple fun runs on engineer after unlocking turrets. Then back to the boring grind for digger which I hadn't played yet.
The amount of people D riding this game, thinking constructive criticism is by any means negative. The overclock system is currently a joke. Tedium isn't a good game mechanic.

You're not "better supporters" of the dev, just because you can only sing its praises, if anything you're the reason the game remains in a worse state than it could be. :)

(though, feel free to passive aggressively reply to this comment how you think it's perfect. I genuinely don't care about your wrong opinion.)

I would say just remove the unnecessary step of having to spend a run as a DEAD RUN to level up a weapon to 18 to unlock the ability to use overclocks. Every run should have the potential to be THE RUN.
Karnas Feb 27, 2024 @ 12:16pm
Literally ruins the game imo. As another commenter said, it sucks just doing dead runs every time you want to try something new...next run.
