Your instinct is correct. They're far from reaching a launch state and the game isn't well balanced. They're only doing massive patches, which means they aren't tweaking balance regularly to try and manage the meta and establish what's good and bad.
You don't need to buy it now, or participate in play testing, and should absolutely wait until release. If they were patching once a fortnight, to fix bugs and do balance, while working on features they want to add that are on the roadmap, it'd be worth playing it in EA. But as it is, you could be waiting months, and since there's no sign of balance patches, even if they launched in 1.0 in April it won't be remotely balanced.
After the next one I'll start again and can play with my new Vader 4 Pro aswell.
