I did it with the Heavy Gunner. Ended up with level 23 thunderhead and level 28 Incendiary Grenade. When i felt weak i put levels in thunderhead but i tried to keep my grenade up as well just not to end up to short. Turns out i had plenty of time to spare, Grenade was 25 before I ended Stage 4.
I do not recommend trying to greed it and put all points in grenade, like you say it is to unreliable. So take your time and do all the stages and level up both your main weapon and the grenade. Its probably possible with other classes as well but i just find thunderhead to be an easiest carry weapon pick.
And yes like SeraphSword says, restart if you do not get the Grenade on level 5. Its fast its easy. Grab some gold at the start to reroll to reduce the numbers of restarts.
I should also note when I got the incendiary to 25 there was no way I was actually going to complete the level. just held out long enough to get it to 25.
I actually did not know this O.o and I did it without it. COuld heave been much easier, but it was simple enough either way.
Cheers!
