I can confirm the Gamersgate Steam key still works, just bought it this morning. I think this is my third time buying this game, I bought it on Google for mobile years ago, bought it on GOG, but I really wanted to complete my Larry collection on Steam.

It's a third party website like Humble Bundle and Fanatical where you buy from there and they give you a code to redeem for the game on Steam. Sometimes they have their own discounts separate from Steam sales, or come in handy in unique cases like this one.
