Won't run on Linux any more
I haven't played for several months, but FM2014 used to play more or less flawlessly on my Arch linux. I recently tried to play it, but it won't run anymore - it crashes almost instantly. The only error I can find (which might even be a red herring) is:

symbol lookup error: /home/paul/.local/share/Steam/steamapps/common/Football Manager 2014/liblibberkelium.so: undefined symbol: __res_search

Can anyone help me get it running again? I really want to play this game again. I can't afford to buy the latest version, plus I'm not convinced this isn't the best version anyway...

Fiddling around with this a bit more and it does seem as though the problem is that a library somewhere (probably in the steam runtime itself) has been updated and is no longer compatible with FM14 - hence the error. If I could figure out which library I might be able to force FM14 to use an older version, but I'm not sure how to do that. Ideally the game would just have an update to fix it, but I'm assuming that it's no longer supported and, even if it was, Linux support would be way down the list of priorities...

Ditto, I have the same problem under Ubuntu 22.04.
I have a few hundred hours of gameplay and a great pleasure to go back to it from time to time with a very long career I have been having since the release of the game.
It launches on Windows 10 with no problem.
Under Ubuntu, I tried Steam Play (to be activated in the settings) but it doesn't work any better.

You can try to activate the compatibility with proton 4.11: right-click on the game then property then compatibility then force the use then choose proton 4.11.
Launch the game.

But. It's quite slow and I can't change the language. I did not test further.
Yeah - I've managed to get it running on 4.11 and it seems to run fine. Takes a long time to start, but runs OK when it has started. Still gutted I can't run it natively anymore. I'm like you - play for a bit every now and then.

You're welcome.

I am French and I had the same problem as you. I forced the game by removing the undesirable languages in the languages folder. Well it works pretty well but not completely. There are still a lot of English terms... which I didn't have before. Would there be a language file to download?

Thanks for the tip - that's worth a try. When you say it doesn't work completely - do you
just mean the fact that there's still English?

Yes, exactly !
Reviving this old thread because I now have a new problem after a system reinstall. The game now fails to launch (even when using proton 4.11) with "failed to find steam executable".

Has anyone encountered anything like this?
