You have to find him.
-> Search for a cage and walk up to it.
-> He will ask you to search for the key (map marker shows it).
-> After you got the key you can unlock the cage and get the wellkeeper.
Hope this helps ;)

Dead Cow Mar 13, 2023 @ 8:37pm
When I found him he was left of spawn (about 1 screen worth), but i'm not sure if he has random locations.

After a few runs on the second map, right at the start, I heard him call for me, it gets quieter further away, and louder the closer you come. He was like 2screens away from the start. After you find him, the rest is easy, go to the keymarker, and back to him.
He is very useful, as he allows you to start with a lot of equipment, and you can add even more.
Cool mechanic.

do you loose the items you equip from the wellkeeper if you die ?

No. Items from him are permanently available.
But to add an new item to his choices, you have to give it up during one run, but only once, so it is worth it.

Any items you have in chest are unlocked forever.

For me is not working.. I leave an item with him for a future run, but the item is not being save. I even got the achievement for leave an item, but on the next run, nothing

just did another run and the rings Im saving are not getting there for the next run

You put the item in the bucket then you buy it from the Wellkeeper in town to add it to your unlocked chest items.
Then you equip the item from chest in town.

The new update adds a marker to indicate the location of the wellkeeper. So i guess this thread could be closed. Thanks to the devs for the update!

Items you send up from the well are only 'retrieved' or available. They become available for purchase (at steep gold cost) from him once retrieved. You just have to talk to him to open shop after you finish a run. Even if you don't purchase the items, it should mark items as "retrieved" and they will stay in the shop if you find them again and die. This particular mechanic is robustly anti-frustration.

Helps keep gold relevant after you've finished most of the shrine of blessings.
