- 63 alumni in the Purchaseables menu - Earn in-game or buy SuperCharger DLC to unlock
- 41 to unlock via Showcase - Earn in-game or buy 40 years of WrestleMania Edition to unlock
- 46 MyFaction Personas - Earn in-game or buy VC to purchase in the mode
- 43 DLC - Have to purchase
That still leaves you with 135 superstars of the current main roster and a lot of NXT to begin the game if my research is correct. The other number you can use is the 137 in the roster list here.

There's overlap where I might have counted an attire unlock in Showcase as an actual new character, so the 137 seems more correct.
Oh, and I fixed a typo. It's 135 characters it leaves you with.
And then these Locker Code things can give you points and such for those Persona Cards on MyFraction (you get one Persona for just loading up MyFaction):

If you play the online MyFraction mode a lot, you can get many points (I have 650K MFP and 80000 VC over 4 months) but the Persona Cards run very high in the Card Market; although, Live Events usually has free card packs and Persona cards to win.
The hope is that 2K releases the Persona cards at the game's online EOL.
This is an interesting fun fact.
...but I think that's actually exclusive to the edition now that I look at it again. With it, you could unlock the characters but you would still need to play the mode to get the arenas.
As you're just looking at Standard Edition, I'd recommend just putting it on Easy and going through it as it's not too difficult once you understand the objectives.
