Can one customize superstars without saving as a custom superstar?

I have been trying to customize Stone Cold's fan signs and it makes me save save it as a a new superstar just to have different fan signs which is very frustrating. Is there no way to just save it to Steve Austin?

I'd also like to be able to create alt attire for wrestlers rather than making custom wrestlers for different clothes. For instance, I'd like to be able to make bra and panties attire for divas so I can "sort of" make bra and panties matches.

No, I think the base characters are protected from edits. Any customisation creates a custom alt version.
