How do you make money?!
So, I've had 3 9.4 or higher releases out of my last five movies (the other two were 8+) including an award winner

I have made, combined, ~6m from them all. It is August of 86, I am still only half way to 40m.

Edit : This is medium difficulty

It took five movies in a franchise with consistent 9.5 or higher rankings to break 5m profit, that's a little absurd.
I made it all the way to 1986 and never made more than 1.5 million off of a single movie. Seems like I made money a lot easier in the demo than in the actual game.

I got down to about 1.5M in the bank and was able to crawl back by keeping it simple, no production stuff, just making small movies that made a million or two here and there.

It seems like you just need to survive long enough to get the ancillary deals, that is the cash flow that will keep you afloat.
Biggest impact I see so far is on the competition on the release date; try to get it out in a month where there is the lowest number of other films

I make a lot of money from Ancilliaries. I have a lot of movies that ranged from negative 2 million to positive 2 million at the box office, but are all sitting at positive 6-12 million now due to VHS releases. You should unlock that research as soon as it becomes available and sign a deal.

I second this. Ancillaries have been most of my income growth. (currently in 1994)
Yeah the game doesn't really explain it at all but once I figured out how to actually get a deal for ancilliaries I went from 14m to 86m in the first five year contract and got a classic and a cult movie out of it.
This game is ridiculous. I make large movies and they get 8.5 or higher ratings and yet I'm always losing money on my movies. Even when self marketing and distributing, I still lose money. What a waste of time playing this.

Played through 2 times so far. Each time I find more issues. I was excited for this after the demo, and it has potential, but currently, it's a buggy, beta tester at best. I've never gotten anything other than a B rating. The money I make during theatrical release seems like the same basic percentage every time.

First small films. Then ancillaries. Then medium and large films if you can satisfy all of the production requirements in the green. Eventually blockbuster franchises. I got 5 billion total revenue from a 5 film blockbuster franchise before 2020. Self-distribution increases profit by a lot for minimal salary costs once you get the research.

So I’m not the only one struggling?! Feels damn near impossible to profit at all
As others said: small movies and then ancillary deals.
My first play was on medium - and I went bankrupt pretty fast lol.
In my second play (on 'easy') I gathered 160 million, but at the same time I failed to open the international market due to lack of prestige points (which for me are the Achilles's tendon right now, it seems I can't collect more than 2 points).

The only way to maintain a constant flow of money (for me) was the home media deals

Unlock the ancillaries pronto. Focus on franchises. Self distribute.

They heavily nerfed income compared to the Next Fest demo, according to what they said on Discord. I think that'd explain it.

Played on hard difficulty, by 2017, I have over a Billion in the bank
