Best weapon/equipment for Rogue (early)?

Just about to advance to final Prologue area. I'm currently at the blacksmith with my Rogue. I currently have a short sword and wonder what I can get. Have enough for all but the explosive shooting bow. But there's another bow I can get. Curious what people suggest to get with the Rogue. Maybe I upgrade short sword or get a shield?

Upgrade the short sword. Shield is good as well to have but Rogue gets 60% block. If you can find the Targe, it reduces damage and does not get the Block penalty.

I concur with the upgraded short sword recommendation. Unfortunately the targe gets the Rogue's block penalty as of the newest patch.

They fixed it? Wish there was an ingame indicator for the reduced damage amount after penalty.
