Not really, since if you want to get everything by mining you'll have to spend time mining, while by scrapping you only have to kill stuff, so will get the resources at half the time.,
And mining with lasers is easy once you got the hang of it.
I personally really like automation games. Perhaps it will be added in a TTW expansion at some point.
All the games about mining and other things should have elements of automation, because things when you need grind (and hear the whole game is about grind) shows that developers still didn't find an option how to keep players with more interesting way. Next development for this game is automation things in proper way (not like silos are working right now just send every single thing from to refiner/purifier. Then some raids/base attacks and defence things, stronger quest bosses with cool loot and of course bigger machines/tanks etc. I just left my comment to share opinion as an experienced player and fun of such genre and type of games.
I'd like to see this, but we'll see how the devs would implement it, if ever. I can see automation in crafting, orbit launch, and auto sorting of loot as possible and actually quite near (at least 6 mos though). Automation for mining though... goes against the principles of the games design.
