The bandits in that dungeon will just run off if you don't have money for them to steal, including the boss. Enemies that flee does not count towards progressing the dungeon, so go in with a full wallet and have one of the gold making spells ready to make more, especially against the boss.
A full full wallet is actually a detriment given the reward the boss gives when you defeat him. You theoretically want it as empty as you can get without him running away. I discovered the running away problem as well when I went in with like nothing.
the boss will steal up to 25k gold every 5 seconds, so you need to keep refilling it unless you go in with a good chunk.
