That aside, once you unlock electical stuff, you can use the Electric armor if you manage to get your Electricity/s to over 100 so you get the permanent +80 defense from it. Also depending on your element the tower becomes harder or easier. Nature can do it easily enough since you can set up DoT effects and then focus on defense.
Note that until you get enough health from the monstium upgrades you will need to give some eye to the farming unless you want the mages to end you though since they can poison you
There are many useful items, electrical armor that was already mentioned (until you meet a boss that shuts down your electricity), chain accessory that increases your damage and mana regen but drains you hp, some other stuff. I just prefer mana regen equipment unless I am customizing loadout for some boss.
I don't have much time to play actively so I have periods where the game is closed and is accumulating time pieces. I then push research on primary school before retiring and after that there is often a jump in progress. With extra mana regen I am able to automate more useful spells which allow me to push further. And then you unlock some new stories and can push even more.
It's spoiler-heavy so don't use if you want to discover stuff yourself
