Quake 1 is more fast paced, mindless-shooter than Quake 2.
It is my preferred game and has many more custom SP maps, AND mods than Quake 2.
Quake 1 is longer IMO and is much darker.

Quake 2 is more like a modern FPS while still holding much of what made Quake 1.
Quake 2 is more story-oriented than anything as it is what began ET:QW and Quake 4.
It isn't quite as moddable/ it doesn't have very many mods and isn't very popular.

Tl;Dr buy Quake 1 if you like fast-paced straight-to-action like doom that has thousands of maps, Quake 2 if you want the same except a bit more story, but a lot less mods and maps.

Just buy Quake 1, I mean, it's the first of the Quake games, why not?

This is completely wrong. It's just as moddable as Quake, even if there's the awful fact that the game module is done in native code and not QuakeC (something that screwed many ambitious "sequel" mod plans from 1997 unexpecting a DLL surprise (despite johnc's .plans making note of it)). But to say "it doesn't have very many mods and isn't very popular" is just very ignorant. Quake2 was hotcakes second ONLY to Deer Hunter, and it has had lots and lots and lots of mods even back then. It was popular enough for id software to cobble up a RETAIL mod compilation CD for Quake2 in 1998 (Netpack 1: Extremeties)

Quake I. Similar to Doom, except fully 3D Viewmodels. Also has unique enemys and 2 Expansion Packs.

Quake 1 is more like Doom, only a darker more horror/ gritty feel to it. Quake 2 is a lot longer than Quake 1 and is a lot more challenging offering a lot more enemies that shoot back at you.

Both are great games. but id choose quake 1 over quake 2. much more rewarding feeling after beating it

Both are great games. People have already touched on Quake 1, but I feel like Quake 2 should be mentioned. Yeah, it's got some elements of a modern FPS, but I still really love the enemy variety in it, and I wish more games had as many enemies as it did. Worth a purchase for sure.

Just make sure you get the ultimate patches for both, as both games on Steam do not have the soundtracks built in.

Quake 1 for sure.

Quake 1 is more like DooM, Quake 2 is abit more like Half-life (but without the looooong fightless intro stage). They both have topnotch gameplay and I suggest getting both.

yeah, i got quake 1 a couple weeks ago, it was a big dissapointment, the graphics are a step up, but the level design/enemy design is far less memorable, the secrets are less "secret", and the guns feel terrible

except the perforator, that gun is my all time favourite fps gun second only to the railgun in number 2 :)
yeaokaysureman Aug 12, 2013 @ 5:43pm
yeah, the railgun is great, i think my top 5 would be

1. upgraded gravity gun (end of half life 2)
2.mini nuke gun (fallout 3/NV)
3:any ratchet and clank gun
4:OP halo pistol (combat evolved)
5:tie: doom shotgun/BFG
