GLQuake/Quake2 on modern hardware(~2006 and newer)
That will never work(technical details - opengl extensions string overflow). But its still possible to run it with OpenGL wrapper, grab
http://sourceforge.net/projects/gldirect/files/
and just place opengl32.dll from archive to game folder.

Anyway, steam versions of Q1 and Q2 lacks music, so there is no point to run exact originals. But that method works fine with every qe1/2/3 game, like also not working newer jedi * series - Jedi Outcast, etc.

Hell no. Thats the point. Most of those Q3 engines games is not adapted also. And looks like you forgot the damned steam overlay for OpenGL games...

Install the community "Ultimate Quake" patches, they switch the executables to better Windows source ports, and puts the music back in. I made a thread here with the link to the old Steamfoums thread where they have install instructions and all that.

Well, if you want to play without ports the software rendered original release using DosBox is the way to go, if I recall correctly, WinQuake and GLQuake were third party ports (weren't they made by SciTech?), and as third party ports go, there are better options than these two.

No, this is official ports. like with doom95. Scitech... heh, thats completely another story about VBE, scitech was famous with VESA UNIVBE driver(full version = SciTech Display Doctor - 2d accelerators(like S3 Trio, etc)driver replacement for dos and later windows), old commercial scitech gldirect was never popular.
