Quake "Ultimate patch" for the Steam version
Back in the old Steam forums the user MenaceInc released patches for the Steam versions of Quake and Quake 2 that made the soundtracks available again, and most importantly changed the executables from the old and poorly supported retail WinQuake/GLQuake files to modern source ports, that makes the games work much better with modern hardware and OSes and with improved multiplayer code. You can still find the thread with all the download links at: http://forums.steampowered.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1756923

Patch worked wonderfully for me. Bumping for other new buyers to see this thread.

I don't want to rain on anyone's parade, but since this thread does keep getting bumped I'll just add my opinion here for what it's worth.

This "ultimate patch" was a great thing back when it was first put together! Back then, DarkPlaces was one of the best choices of Quake engines available. But by now this "patch" is out of date -- the version of DarkPlaces that it gives you is old enough that it has at least one game-breaking bug that has been fixed in later versions.

If you really want to use DarkPlaces you can/should just get the latest version straight from the source: https://icculus.org/twilight/darkplaces/download.html (You'll want to get a "DarkPlaces engine" download from the "Latest stable/official release" links there.)

And you can get the soundtrack music files from here: http://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=119489135

=====

It's also worth mentioning that DarkPlaces might not be the best choice for you. For example if you want a more "authentic"-looking Quake, or want to play multiplayer. This guide describes some of the Quake engines available and what each one is best at: http://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=118401000

=====

Anyway... carry on. :-) It's cool to see people playing Quake regardless of how they choose to set it up. If you're just going to be poking around a bit with the game rather than playing it through, you may not run across any big problems with the "ultimate patch" and it does make for a pretty easy way to install DarkPlaces+music. If you want to dig into things a little more though, then maybe the links above will help.

Mine did come from Medafire but it worked fine. I don't remember any foolyou links around the real link to the patch. Maybe my ad blockers took care of that...

Johnny, that DarkPlaces download link, along with the entire website attached to it, is coming up dead for me. Any ideas/insight as to what the deal is?

Well that's unfortunate... looks like icculus.org forgot to renew their domain, or something?

The Quaddicted archive of Quake engines does still have the latest (I think) DarkPlaces downloads mirrored:

Windows 64-bit at https://www.quaddicted.com/files/engines/darkplacesenginewindows64only20140430.zip

Windows 32-bit at https://www.quaddicted.com/files/engines/darkplacesenginewindowsonly20140430.zip

Collection of Windows 32-bit, OS X, and Linux versions at https://www.quaddicted.com/files/engines/darkplacesengine20140430.zip

edit: icculus.org is back now.

I downloaded the old one at the top of the thread, maybe someone should make a new thread for this, or update this one, but the ones I got work fine.

change the filename of the mod you want to play to Winquake.exe since that is what steam launches the game with.
