This "ultimate patch" was a great thing back when it was first put together! Back then, DarkPlaces was one of the best choices of Quake engines available. But by now this "patch" is out of date -- the version of DarkPlaces that it gives you is old enough that it has at least one game-breaking bug that has been fixed in later versions.
If you really want to use DarkPlaces you can/should just get the latest version straight from the source: https://icculus.org/twilight/darkplaces/download.html (You'll want to get a "DarkPlaces engine" download from the "Latest stable/official release" links there.)
And you can get the soundtrack music files from here: http://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=119489135
=====
It's also worth mentioning that DarkPlaces might not be the best choice for you. For example if you want a more "authentic"-looking Quake, or want to play multiplayer. This guide describes some of the Quake engines available and what each one is best at: http://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=118401000

Anyway... carry on. :-) It's cool to see people playing Quake regardless of how they choose to set it up. If you're just going to be poking around a bit with the game rather than playing it through, you may not run across any big problems with the "ultimate patch" and it does make for a pretty easy way to install DarkPlaces+music. If you want to dig into things a little more though, then maybe the links above will help.
Johnny, that DarkPlaces download link, along with the entire website attached to it, is coming up dead for me. Any ideas/insight as to what the deal is?
The Quaddicted archive of Quake engines does still have the latest (I think) DarkPlaces downloads mirrored:

edit: icculus.org is back now.
This thread ought to become stickied.
change the filename of the mod you want to play to Winquake.exe since that is what steam launches the game with.
Here they are![linkbun.ch]
