So most mods made in the previous decade or so are targeted towards QuakeSpasm, and both of the above are forks of that project. They have a few advantages:
* they support frame rates above 72 without breaking physics
* they render water warping like the original software Quake
* they have many options in the menu that QS only allows from the console
* their renderers are capable of playing large maps at hundreds of FPS
* mouse support in menus
* mod browser
* Ironwail has a map browser too
* support for custom HUDs in mods
* VkQuake supports custom particles in mods like Arcane Dimensions
* VkQuake will let you use the original or enhanced models if you use it with the new remaster files
* better anti-aliasing solutions than other ports [MSAA and SSAA]

I prefer Ironwail as far as modern engines go but I've always had a soft spot for Darkplaces. It has some neat little features.
Just use Ironwail or vkQuake. :)
Also played some mods and the framerate improvement on huge maps is absolutely crazy.
Unfortunately it lacks support for the newer models, but I take what I can get.
