Oh they're also split between death matching and online co-op. I've mostly seen online co-op

As Ake_Vader said above, if you are looking for deathmatch the bulk of active DM players play Quakeworld.

Just went on the remaster via Steam, I think there was about 15-20 people total, so not a lot. I think more people are playing Quake II due to the remaster more recent. I play both Quake and Quake II single player and multiplayer. Given that both games are 26+ years old it has a big community but is divided what ports people play.

oh yeah, i actually think its worth getting just for the bots, so much fun, also i will look into quakeworld after awhile, i just wanna play more bots first, im getting quake 1 and 2 on steam soon, but i have them on my free 3 month game pass right now

They were on sale about a month ago, I got them on my sons Steam account so we can play Deathmatch
