Quake
How to find out what difficulty Im playing in
So I finished the 3rd episode and when I came out, I noticed the 1st and the 2nd doors are open....

♥♥♥♥.

I guess I must have completed that episode on a new save..

I don't think I can recover my previous saves now where I've done the first two episode, but at least I want to find out what was the difficulty I was playing the 3rd episode at. Is there any way? Like a command or something? If Im playing at hard at least then I'll just continue.

The game sometimes forgets which episodes were completed when saving/loading. A glitch.

You can manually retrieve the episode runes: open the console (~ or ^ key), type impulse 11, and close the console again. You'll see that the first rune has now appeared on your status bar. Repeat the process to get the second rune. You can just play the fourth episode and upon returning to the start map the entrances should be blocked. Or you can type changelevel start to see the effect immediately.

To check which difficulty you're playing on, type skill in the console. The numbers are: 0: easy, 1: normal, 2: hard, 3: nightmare.

The 'Impulse 11' console command doesn't work for me at all. I've completed all 4 episodes only to be put back at the intro with episode 4 blocked off only. This console command doesn't change anything for me. I type the command then hit enter then type changelevel start, the screen flashes but the result is exactly the same - I have only the 4th rune in my bar. I've tried it multiple times but no more runes are appearing! I've also tried the noclip thing but I can't get this to repsond either.

Are you using Darkplaces? If so, you need to enable cheats first by typing sv_cheats 1 in the console and then type restart. In vanilla Quake and most source ports, the cheats work out of the box.

there is no real way to tell, but at the start of the game you choose a difficulty
