Don't listen to him OP and just save whenever you want to. Afterall it's quite easy to make a costly mistake, better be safe than sorry!
-Take your time, clear one area at a time (don't just charge through the level and agro every monster, especially on maps where you have to do some back tracking.)
-Use door ways and corridors to your advantage.
-Monsters can hurt each other so get your circle strafe game down.
-Learn the lay out of the maps (on a lower difficulty if necessary).
-When possible save nails and LG cells for shamblers. (Shamblers have 50% damage reduction vs explosive weapons. So basically a direct rocket to a shambler only does marginally more damage than a point blank double barrel shotgun shot.)
-KILL SPAWNS ON SIGHT, DON'T LET THE F*****S START BOUNCING AROUND!! lol
-The base shotgun has a quite tight spread, good for picking off enemies from long-ish range.
-If you can, save power ups for tough sections of maps.
-Save often, ignore the guy above who complains that saving ruins the game. It's your game, you paid for it, enjoy it how you like.
-Also, if I wasn't clear... ♥♥♥♥ SPAWNS!! KILL ON SIGHT!! ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ SANDY WHY ALL THE SPAWNS?!?!?!
My grandma could beat the game if she saved as much as you.
Worst parts of Quake on Nightmare are:
Episode 4, you need to hog all the power ups you can get in the final levels, spawns are a motherfug.
Scourge of Armagon, getting killed out of nowhere by a flying testicle and this happens a lot.
Disolution of Eternity, the final boss.
Dimension of the past, rounding up enemies to kill with splash damage because this expansion is very very stingy with ammo.
That said, I am half way through Dimension of the Past, the first secret level barely gives you any ammo. I have All Kill and All Secrets in most levels. I missed about two secrets and maybe 5 enemies tops between Scourge of Armagon and Disolution of Eternity.
Scourge of Armagon level design and OST kick ass.
DoE gives you a weird OP Arsenal.
DotP is vanilla Quake but Hard thus far.
