Quake
Does Anybody Know How to Run Quake Original?
I used to be able to play the original version of Quake before the enhanced edition, but now it stops as soon as I try loading into the older version of Quake and I get an error message. Does anybody know how to solve this issue?

Okay... what does the error say?

Have you tried verifying the integrity of the game files? To this right click on the game in your Steam Library, click on Properties, go to Local Files, and then click "Verify Integrity of Local Files".

I verified the local files and I still get the same error message, something about the video

The original software rendered dos version? Buy a 30 year old x86 and install dos on it.

Otherwise, the winquake port was the one Steam installed before Bethesda got ahold of it. But generally, Quakespasm Spiked and VkQuake are the best ways to play now. Though I'm still fond of the Darkplaces Epsilon pack.

Steam tries to launch glquake by default when you select to run the original version after clicking play. Sounds like your setup doesn't like the original glquake. It can be a bit picky on newer operating systems. Probably trying to default to a resolution low enough windows doesn't like it.

Unfortunately, glquake requires the use of command line to set resolution and can't be changed in-game.

Right click on the game, go to properties then put this in the bar under the text that says "Advanced users may choose to enter modifications to their launch options"
-width 1024 -height 768 -bpp 32

Or just use dosbox SVN.

You mean the winquake port that's still in the install folder alongside the dos exe and glquake exe?

That winquake port? The ♥♥♥♥ does bethesda have to do with anything? The original files are still right where they used to be.

Maybe open the exe and go to compatibility options, disable DPI scaling.

I just get a black screen with no sounds when I choose Play Quake (Original), but if I hit enter then all of a sudden it works fine. I'm on Windows 10

Edit: actually, when I first open it it's completely unresponsive. I hit with Windows button on my keyboard which minimizes the game window and brings me back to the desktop, then I bring the game window back up by clicking on it, and then I press Enter and then things seem to be fine after that

That's an odd one. Try mopey bloke's dpi setting suggestion.

Ok, so I put the command in the bar to change the video display, now I'm not getting an error but the game exits as soon as it boots up

Interesting.

What video card do you have? glquake tends to work with most cards, but some can be annoying about gl extensions. Can be worked around with either hex editing or a tweak to the game profile if you're on a nvidia card.

Honestly, if you've got a card that supports vulkan, I'd grab vkquake, extract it into the folder where glquake/winquake/dosquake are, then rename the vkquake exe to glquake.exe.

It works with e.g. Quakespasm or you start the winquake.exe which doesnt look so good,

Steam doesn't launch winquake, it launches glquake.

Steam version does come with WinQuake though, it's in the game folder.

It does, yes. It also comes with dosquake.

Point is, glquake is what steam launches when you select original.
