It's probably intentional though.

This was taken at the end of a level, but there is no blue key on this level and I had used and picked up the gold key here.
I even got credit for beating this episode as well. Something that doesn't kick in if you use cheats.
Don't worry, console newbie, the devs aren't that stupid yet. Why don't you go back to your newbie console with its checkpoints, auto-aim and tiny levels?
If you are this good of PC hardcore, elite FOV, 144hz, K&M gamer, then play like a man and DON'T EVER save midlevel. If you die, you start the level from the beginning. That's how men play Quake. Kids, Quicksave every 30 seconds.
All well and good but a lot of us don't want to replay the same level 50 times. There are some sort of buggy areas that result in a lot of deaths and restarting would be painfully boring. If you can enjoy playing without saving then that's fine, but some of us just want to see all the maps and get through it lol
Levels are 15 mins affairs anyway.. not much trouble to restart. I apply non save policy in any classic FPS from the 90s. Saving mid level makes difficulty settings completely trivial.
Been revisiting them all lately. Got through Herectic, Hexen and Blood without mid level saving.. Now Quake. Need to go back for Doom soon.
Even on normal, sometimes you'll go through a portal just to get blasted by enemies without having any sort of preparation (especially in Dissolution of Eternity, that happens all the time). Things like that are just BS, and I don't think new players will feel good going through ♥♥♥♥ like that over and over again. Levels might take 15 minutes, but if you keep dying over and over to things you don't know are coming, levels are gonna end up getting lenghty.
