as someone new to the series, what happened to quake?

So this is my first quake game and it's like, really good, what happened with the series that made it sorta become what quake champions became? when did it just like, fall off?

It's just called it got old and newer games replaced it as people slowly left for them. Very simple, but unfortunate truth.

The newer Quake games just do not hold a candle to Quake 1 and 2, and many wont even try them because they are old. Their loss I guess.

I simply hope, some other developing studio makes a new Quake (named different), and that will be. I will spend all my money on it if it is good enough to be a competitive game. I got enough of guided games with aim assist for this crystal generation of instant reward or uninstall.
