RTX?
Can the devs add RTX support? It looks amaze balls in Quake II RTX! And would look amaze balls here. :D

It may be a gimmick, but it is a nice looking gimmick.

I think it boils down to how it's used. The Quake II RTX looks great IMO. I think they could do the same with Quake Remastered. The option would be to turn it off if you don't like it :)

Ray tracing is the holy grail for real time 3d artists. It won't be going away anytime soon. They've been faking ray tracing since 3d games started.

Saying RTX is a gimmick it's pure cave men ignorance that doesn't eve understand what ray tracing is.

On topic: It's not gonna happen. Different developers, different purpose. Quake 2 RTX it was made by Nvidia themselves as a playground test for the tech.

This port is developed by Nightdive studios and was made specifically to be ported to consoles and runs in an engine not designed for raytracing whatsoever.

That's too bad, maybe one day :)

You keep saying that, but, ray tracing in vulkan is just a part of the api, as seen by the fact that quake 2 rtx is running in vulkan rather than the dx12 most major games use for ray tracing.

It's just a matter of implementation.

Well I hope you're right. I'd really like to see raytracing on Quake.

But keep in mind that a lot more than just ray tracing was done in Quake 2 RTX. For Raytracing to really shine, objects and surfaces in the world need material properties and different texture maps.

Quake 2 RTX got the full treatment. Every surface had a material assigned to it.. different types of metal, stone, wood etc.. as well as normal maps, specular maps and texture layering to make surfaces catch light correctly and display their materials.

It's probably way beyond the scope of this release. Sure, they could be lazy and just turn RT GI and leave at that.. but it wouldn't look half as good as Quake 2.

Yes, I fully admit it would take a substantial amount of work.

I also didn't say it was likely to ever happen.

I was just pointing out that your blanket statement that it isn't POSSIBLE is factually incorrect.

but youre welcome to make a project using DX12 (this game is DX11 btw) or vulkan RTX
looking at your pc specs tells me you don't even know what RTX is.

I honestly don't see how RTX could work with Quake. Quake 2 had enviroments better suited to it

There is no such a thing as an environment raytracing wouldn't work. Raytracing aims to accurately display lights as they do in real life. It work in any situation. It doesn't depend of the type of environment.

raytracing is not a gimmick! It may be a new tech for games but it's not gimmicky.
(I'm not being biased here, I don't even have an RTX card, and probably won't for a while now)

I mean, there is still a part of me that enjoys seeing the visual side of "video" games getting a big boost. It's another step toward those animated movie visuals. Lighting was always a barrier there.

The thing a lot of people don't understand is that raytracing is not just something that will enhance the look of a game, but it's also an immense time saver on the development side.
Artists need to spend a lot of time to implement visual simulations and techniques to achieve certain effects... there are a ton of different time consuming solution to get to results such as reflections and real time shadows. A lot of time and money spent in creating cube maps for every scene and shadow maps, baked lights etc...
Ray tracing not only looks more accurate, but it's also an automatic system that will take care of everything that used to take a lot of time and artistry to get right.

So games will get developed quicker, cutting development costs while also looking better. Raytracing is the future and one day there won't be any other kind and every game will be ray traced and we will take it for granted.

Eh. Prebaked lighting will never go away entirely. Just like pixel art, affine distortion and jitter, there will always be someone who wants to use older looks.

Gee, if only it had, I dunno... settings? You know, things the developer has control over? Choosing exactly how shiny and reflective a surface should be??!!?!

WOULDN'T THAT BE COOL??????
