Quake
surprisingly low framerate
Running this game through quakespasm at 1080 but I'm getting like 70fps. I was hoping for 100+.
My specs: https://prnt.sc/vgiwez. Any ideas what's going on?

Quakespasm is limited to like 72, I think QUakespasm spiked supports higher framerates.

I tried using Quakespasm spiked but the framerate wouldn't go any higher

Have you changed host_maxfps to 72+ values (from default 72 fps)?

Quakespasm is limited to 72 fps max. If you go higher, the game physics will break. If you want to have higher framerates with proper physics functionality, use Quakespasm Spiked (google it) and set host_maxfps to the desired framerate (you'll find this entry in the config.cfg file in your id1 folder. this file is created once you've started Quakespasm Spiked once.).

Note that if you play any mods, depending on the complexity of the mod/map, you may still not be able to reach higher framerates (such as 120/144 etc.)

If you want the best performing sourceport, and your GFX card supports it, use vkQuake (Vulkan Quake). It's also based on Quakespasm and has pretty much all it's functionality but running on Vulkan as opposed to OpenGL. Also, you can use "exclusive fullscreen" (I think you can switch to it in-game by pressing Alt+Enter). I find that can reduce occasional stutter and increase fps output a bit.

Quakespasm and Quakespasm Spike are not the same engine.

I recommend trying Quakespasm Spiked, Darkplaces, and FTEQW. If multiplayer is not a concern then also check out vkQuake.

I use mostly Darkplaces.

Thanks for the advice!

Older games were made at a time when 120/144 monitors weren't that common, refresh rates were usually something like 60, 75, 85 and similar. You see a lot of older games with framerates capped at 70-80. But as others have said there are some sourceports for Quake that can let you go higher without problems. I personally use Quakespasm (not Spiked) and it's fine for me since I run at 60hz and cap to 60fps in nvidia inspector anyway

Quake has bugs at high framerates, so Quakespasm locks the framerate to 72 FPS. I personally use vkQuake because those bugs have been fixed in it, so you can play it at high framerates.
