No Intro Demo(Quakespasm)
Finally have Quakespasm running through steam so it'll track my playing time but I noticed there's no intro demo running in the background and only the menu. Is there a way to fix this? It's not a big deal since everything else works fine. Just wanted to see if any one had something happen.

you have to open the MS Editor and then enter the following lines:

startdemos demo3 demo1 demo2
demos

then you have to save the whole thing as autoexec.cfg and copy it to the following directory:
x: \ Steam \ steamapps \ common \ Quake \ Id1
(you have to replace the x with the letter of the drive on which you installed steam)

that's the solution for Quake 1
The whole thing works with the expansion packs too.

expansion pack 1:

open the MS Editor and then enter the following lines:

startdemos hipdemo3 hipdemo1 hipdemo2 hipdemo4
demos

save the whole thing as autoexec.cfg and copy it to the following directory:
x:\Steam\steamapps\common\Quake\hipnotic

expansion pack 2:

open the MS Editor and then enter the following lines:

startdemos demo3 demo1 demo2
demos

save the whole thing as autoexec.cfg and copy it to the following directory:
x:\Steam\steamapps\common\Quake\rogue

I hope I could help you with this.

Just wanted to say thanks. This helped me get the Quake demo to work properly on the Quakespasm source port. Just a heads up, the text file needs to be saved in notepad and not MS Editor.

It's just disabled in QuakeSpasm by default, my guess it's for convenience. I actually prefer it this way, because if demos start running it starts blaring track02 with that heavy noisy music.

The solution to "no demos are playing" is to run QuakeSpasm with a special commandline, like so (it also works for QuakeSpasmSpiked version):

quakespasm.exe -fitz

It will behave like 'normal' Quake on start up and play demos, and also ignore the little extra bits from quakespasm.pak, which has just a couple of external .ENT files as fixes and a different console background.

I agree that the no demo in Quakespasm is by design. Back in the day, I was so tired of seeing the original demo(s) play, I set it up to run one of my own bot fight recordings at start-up instead. I had used the "record" command in GLQuake, which is the same command in all aftermarket Quake engines I believe, to make my own personal demo. Much better!
