you have to open the MS Editor and then enter the following lines:
startdemos demo3 demo1 demo2
demos
then you have to save the whole thing as autoexec.cfg and copy it to the following directory:
x: \ Steam \ steamapps \ common \ Quake \ Id1
(you have to replace the x with the letter of the drive on which you installed steam)
that's the solution for Quake 1
The whole thing works with the expansion packs too.
expansion pack 1:
open the MS Editor and then enter the following lines:
startdemos hipdemo3 hipdemo1 hipdemo2 hipdemo4
demos
save the whole thing as autoexec.cfg and copy it to the following directory:
x:\Steam\steamapps\common\Quake\hipnotic
expansion pack 2:
open the MS Editor and then enter the following lines:
startdemos demo3 demo1 demo2
demos
save the whole thing as autoexec.cfg and copy it to the following directory:
x:\Steam\steamapps\common\Quake\rogue
I hope I could help you with this.
The solution to "no demos are playing" is to run QuakeSpasm with a special commandline, like so (it also works for QuakeSpasmSpiked version):
quakespasm.exe -fitz
It will behave like 'normal' Quake on start up and play demos, and also ignore the little extra bits from quakespasm.pak, which has just a couple of external .ENT files as fixes and a different console background.
