Quake 1 is the odd one here as it does have some links to the Strogg (Strogg crates), but generally takes place in strange, medievalish, dark fantasy dimensions. The connection with the other games was never explained but it would be a perfect material for a reboot of sorts.
As for Quake 3 Arena - yeah, that's even odder, the intro here simply shows Sarge kicking @sses, but that's pretty much it. We could say Quake 3's SP campaign was never really made, just a "bot training" mode.
Then Quake 3 Arena's backstory is about supperior being summoning warriors from all place and age to fight between them (thus why we see both the Doomguy, the Ranger, Bitterman and some other characters), let's put that game at the very end of the timeline
Quake 1 deserves some kind of reboot (a la Doom 2016)
Honestly, Q3A's plot is just an excuse for the mish-mash of all the different arena maps and combatants. I wouldn't really overthink Quake's story line in general, as it wasn't really the focus with any game in the series. Quake 4 is actually the most "story rich" of the bunch, with cut-scenes and all.
Quake could indeed be rebooted in a similar fashion to Doom 2016.
That's a sad truth... Quake's MP is great (and even supperior to Doom, which was already great) but this shouldn't be an excuse to not make SP game anymore...
