This has nothing to do with it. In the 90's I grew up in a big city, a few blocks away from a huge strip of computer stores and even then it was hard to find people in my high school who played computer games. Now imagine being a female in small town.. your close gaming friends were all online and rarely IRL.

Clans back in the 90's/early 00's, regardless of gender, were a really special thing.

What, you think only dudes play video games? Maybe you missed out on Hellchick, Jube, and Mynx on Planetquake. I used to play Quake 3 with l4mby, Jess, PreciousDeath and Demonwench. There's a lot of female gamers out there, always has been. Many just tended not to advertise their gender because too many male players would start hitting on them instead of focusing on the fragging.
