Quake

this game kinda sucks.... so sorry
I played Wolfenstein, Doom, Hexen, and Duke 3d, and tons of other "doom clones" back in the 1990s. I loved them all, but for some reason I never got around to playing the quake series.

So here I am playing it for the first time in 2018 and..............
It kinda sucks hahaha.

The controls aren't that great. The weapons aren't as satisfying. The gameplay is slower paced. Meh.

I have to disagree on Quake sucking. However, it is definitely a slower paced FPS, compared to Doom. Faster pace than Wolf 3D though. One of the only gripes I always had about Quake was the graphics though. It came out in 1996 (it's newer than all four games you mentioned), but Quake's graphics were the absolute worse. Quake was made by the same team that made Wolf 3D and Doom, so it's not like they didn't have the technology.

Just a by the way, since you didn't like Quake 1... you definitely won't like Quake 2. It's even more slow paced.

First Quake is an excellent fast-paced (it's fast for me) horror shooter, especially with that ominous soundtrack from NIИ, which is, sadly, missing from the Steam version. It's also a great tech-demo, as for it's time, it had the most advanced full 3D engine on the market and pushed early 3D acceleration with source ports like GLQuake.

But the "meat" of the game is actually not the single-player, but the multi-player and modding. To properly experience those things, you had to be into the game when it was still a big deal, so years ago. Newcommers to the game will never quite "get it", as they missed out on all the good things that it delivered in it's hay-day.

However, this doesn't mean you cannot enjoy it today, it's still a fairly neat game with a solid core and a fair amount of content made for it.

With that said, I would agree that Doom and other "2.5D" shooters are usually more enjoyable single-player experiences. As said, Quake was mostly for gushing over advanced 3D visuals, atmosphere, online "fragging" and modding/map making.

My 2 cents.

You are objectively wrong, lmao @ complaining about controls and pretending any of those are any better, or that Wolf weapons aren't just hitscan pistols of various speeds, or that Duke and Hexen don't consist of endless backtracking and scrolling through item lists.

Worst? Compared to what? It's was the first fully 3D FPS with real-time rendering and dynamic movement. The graphics were cutting edge for their time and considered the best.

Edit: Oh wait, do you mean textures when you say graphics? Is this just a complaint about too much brown?

Accelerations are higher in Quake than Doom, in affect making for quicker gameplay.

Textures, yeah... they're absolutely horrible. It's not the brown, I know that's just part of the theme. It's the godawful pixelation that gets me. The 3D effects are the only good graphical components in the game. The lighting is almost nonexistent (but it was incredible how, for example, enemy fireballs give off some lighting), and the movement is pretty choppy.

Don't get me wrong, I personally love Quake. But it does look like crap.

Errr what about the drastically more sophisticated architecture than Doom and Hexen (such as ability to pass under and over walkways and way more scripts), the fact that Duke 3D was a flat Paper Mario pixellated mess, or how none of Doom, Hexen, nor Duke 3D ever had a free patch that added texture filtering to rectify the "godawful pixelation?"

Don't forget rocket jumping, circle jumping, no vertical autoaim, levels that aren't just hallways or courtyards, a powerup that lets you kill enemies faster besides with your fist, the game was clearly designed around mouse use instead of keyboard use, implementation of TCP/IP for easier connectivity...
Hyper Sonic May 24, 2018 @ 1:54pm
Ya, though source ports like GZDoom can close many of those gaps. But I have a hard time going from Quake to Doom just because of the slow accelerations in Doom, and no settings to change the acceleration value. Speed with low accelerations isn't that much of a draw.

Oh ya, the rocket bounding boxes are gigantic compared to Quake, making many edge shots impossible.

I don't like the pixels either and I also don't like the blurred look of glquake. Have you tried any of the updated engines and hi-res texture packs that are available? Maybe there's one to your liking? I really dig the Darkplaces engine myself ( https://icculus.org/twilight/darkplaces/index.html ) with Rygel's texture pack (available on the DP download page).

I revisit the game about every 3 years but this is the first time I've did a more exhaustive hunt for textures, etc. What I found just this last week, and wholeheartedly suggest, is The Quake HD Pack over at Mod DB ( https://www.moddb.com/mods/quake-hd-pack-guide ). It uses the Darkplaces engine (comes with it already) plus it's a mod collection, including hi-res textures from The Quake Retexturing Project (which is also listed on the DP download page), better particle effects, improved torches, real-time lighting, and more.

Oh yeah, I have the Quake HD Pack from ModDB that you linked. Makes it much easier for me to play! I don't mind pixels or anything, I grew up playing old pixelated games, but something about Quake... it's always caused a bit of eye strain for me. I'm completely unbothered with the HD pack though.

But thank you for the wonderful suggestions! I'm sure that might help get some people more into Quake (;

Oh, you should probably change the control config to whatever you want. Mouse look isn't on by default and that's really sucky. The graphics are a bit dated, but it's nothing a mod like Project Epsilon can't fix. Some source-ports like DarkPlaces also support stuff like colored lighting to make even vanilla look a bit less plain.

Quake is definitely way slower paced than Doom and Wolfenstein though. It's meant to be a horror shooter -- all of those crazy speedruns you see on Youtube and stuff are from basically years of practice.
Hyper Sonic May 25, 2018 @ 1:05pm
The acceleration in Quake is quite a bit more than in Doom. In Doom it takes about a full second to go full speed in one direction to full speed in the opposite direction. In Quake it takes somewhere around 1/4 to 1/2 of a second. This makes strafing in and out of view much quicker for shotgun and rocket shots.

The top speed in Doom is actually a tad ridiculous for many indoor areas (especially when bichording), but feel just right for large outdoor areas I suppose.

320 units/sec Quake anychord
562 units/sec Doom unichord
719 units/sec Doom bichord

Lots of cool Quake Teamfortress videos on YouTube, it was fast paced, especially with the scout.

BTW you can make Quake top speed higher
sv_maxspeed 600
cl_forwardspeed 600
cl_sidespeed 600

I always make the movement speeds slower. Which makes it a bit harder also. But I mostly do it so that things have a better sense of scale. Walking more slowly below a giant archway actually makes it feel giant. Running through levels to fast and you lose some of the atmosphere... imo.

You move almost right at walking speed and the running is more than fast enough to engage the enemy. Not to mention the additive nature of strafing to movement.

cl_backspeed "160"
cl_forwardspeed "160"
cl_sidespeed "140"
cl_upspeed "160"

... for those interested in trying it out.
