A solid source port compatible with Steam?
Hey there! I did a little research aboout Quake source ports and i found some pretty good ones, but i wonder if there is an ultimate version of them which supports the original OST without mounting an .iso, supports fullhd and mouse look without modifying any files, AND most importantly: which can be used with steam, with steam overlay support.

i did not want to randomly download every source ports just to find out which one is the most suitable for this criterions, so i wanna ask your help about this question, before i start my second playthrough.

Darkplaces does all of the above, except the steam overlay.

I had to disable Steam overlay on darkplaces, as when any of it appeared, the rest of the screen garbled until the overlay dissapeared.

My Darkplaces has the original OST for the base game and both mission packs as .pk3 files so no .ISO mounting is needed. It would be great if lord havok released an updated version that didn't hate the steam overlay.

I had to put all the files into my steam install and rename darkplaces.exe to glquake.exe to get it to work as Steam Quake.

Well i found DirectQ a pretty solid port, which is very easy to use, supports the .ogg soundtrack and with a little magic it can be used with the Steam overlay, so it provides everything what i needed.

Darkplaces seemed a little too much enchanted port for me, with all those dynamic lights and improved effects, so i skipped that option. But as i see, most of the players are recommending that port.

Darkplaces used to be the go-to choice so it still has a lot of mindshare. For various reasons I would recommend looking at other stuff these days though.

DirectQ does have some nice features that still no other Quake engine has picked up on, but on the other hand it does have some longstanding bugs that are just not going to get fixed.

If you liked DirectQ then you might want to take a look at Mark V: http://quakeone.com/markv/

That Quake engine includes a few different "variants". One that renders things like WinQuake (mark_v_winquake), one that renders more like GLQuake (mark_v), and one that is like GLQuake but uses DirectX 9 instead of OpenGL (dx9_mark_v). (The reason I mention this in the context of DirectQ is that the DirectQ developer helped with that last one.)

Hi, i know im a year late, but i think i did it.

The source port in question is QuakeSpasm, which you can download in its official website: http://quakespasm.sourceforge.net/download.htm

When you download it, go to your Quake directory and erase the Glquake file.

Copy the files that you extracted from the source port and paste them in the Quake directory.

Rename the file quakespasm.exe to Glquake.

Done! Now the game works with the steam overlay and everything, and this source port is the most vanilla i found!

DirectQ worked well, but thanks!

edit: previous post by "ah nao" sums it up. you can use any cliente with this method

you can "fool" Steam to think you're running "Steam Quake" but you're really running a modern source port. here's how https://www.quakeworld.nu/forum/topic/6548/play-modern-qw-using-steam
