Do dais not always have an effect on the current screen?
I know, I know, I really don't want to spoil this game for myself (I'm being very careful.)

In the Gate of Guidance, specifically the heavenly corridor where the first "trapped" dais is located, there is a second dais accesible by "the path of gazing faces", which involves walking along an invisible walkway. Activating this caused the typical sound to play, but had absolutely no other effect, and I'm paranoid that activating the trap screwed me over, given this game's reputation.

This is true, in most cases it doesn't actually.

Like Nie says, the dias' effects *usually* aren't on the same screen. There are hints towards what each does. For example:
Skeletons are around most trap diases. In the case of the two diases in the Heavenly Corridor, The priest in the Pit of the Holy Grail says that that is the path to the ankh. Before those two platforms were hollowed out, there was also a picture of an ankh on each.
