The Axe and Chain Whip...
I've just managed to screw myself up and lock up the chain whip between the pillars, and I've been thinking...

So the Axe is relatively easy to obtain, hidden behind a relatively accessible wall and a very obvious "this will crush you" trap, yet the Chain whip requires you to make a hard timed jump, beat a sub-boss and solve a potentially deadly trap that NEVER RESETS* if you screw it up? Why? What is the logic behind this? The axe does more damage, making it arguably one of the best weapons in the game, yet it's not protected by one-time-only traps. The logic behind the one-time thing also fails when you simply reload the game on failure.

*Okay yes, I've read the guides and yes, you can reset the trap... after almost completing the game. So yeah, why? I've played the game for 12 hours now, had no troubles like this, had a lot of fun, and now this really makes me not want to play anymore, especially if there's more of these one-time-mess-up things up ahead.

Because the chain whip is a whip upgrade while the axe is a totally different weapon type.

I don't know how it works in this version but there are things in the game that actually require the axe to break in the old version.

The axe doesn't do more damage.
And there's only three things in the game that become unrevertable.
The chain whip is the better weapon for most situations. Yes the axe does more base damage but it's incredibly slow making it do less overall damage unless you are fighting enemies with shields; the chain whip does 4 damage but you can attack faster with it than the axe. Not only that, the axe leaves you extremely vulnerable when you swing it; a guaranteed death sentence in hard difficulty.

Axe is only good for bosses, minibosses, and enemies that are directly on the floor above you.

The axe does do more base damage, it hits for 5 damage whereas the chain whip only does 4 damage. Overall damage however the whip is better since you can swing it faster, especially with the spaulder.

So the moral of the story would be "always save in different slots?"
This is like asking why it's easier to get the Flail Whip than the Chain Whip. Besides which, the Axe is hard to get without yagostr or spoilers, and these puzzles are the same as the original, in which each form of the final boss required a different main weapon.

You can't reset the Chain Whip ever, actually. It's an option, but the fairy would tell you that there's a better whip available and to not waste your time.

Yes. There's a lot of things you can lock yourself out of. weapons, one of the life orbs, hell temple, etc. On the plus side even if you miss everything the game is much faster on a second playthrough, so if it took you 60 hours to beat the game the first time it'll only take around 4-5 hours the second time.

In the original game there was even more things you can lock youself out of like ROM cartridges; and that game gave you even less save slots.

I've screwed up Hell Temple unlock late in the process, and the only consequence to that is that I had to go back as far as talking to Xelpud at night again, and repeat the other steps from there.

No I'm refering to locking yourself out of hell temple permanetly. In the original game for example if you never activate the elevator in gate of guidance before killing all 8 guardians you'll be locked out permanetly. Supposedly in the remake if you talk to an NPC or shopkeeper before jumping in the coffin you can also be permanetly locked out but I haven't verified that one yet.

The wiki is wrong. Failing the Hell Temple quest just returns you to the step where you need to wait until nightfall and talk to Xelpud.

Yea I had a feeling that it was. Was refering mainly to the original game when I made the other post and didn't really wanna bring up that dubious info on the remake but I figured "why not"?
