Where do you find magic crystals for updating spells?

I never find any and it costs 450 of them to upgrade a spell from level 2 to level 3. Is the game designed so upgrading a spell is supposed to be an extremely rare event?

chests only from what i saw. quest chests. get heal to 3 and that is all you really need. then stack both atk, and magic. wear both braids wear the item that gives bonus mana per hit. and get the trident weapon from the cat mermaid king. once i got it the game became easy mode. also get the gold armour from gold tower. helm and chest piece or more if you can.

Magic crystals are rewards from blue puzzle stones and finding hidden chests disguised as the environment(look for perculiar arrangements of things in the world like maybe rocks and starfishes placed in an odd pattern).
