Learn to mod, mod, mod.
Everything else, weapons, Warframes, even how to play them hangs from the modding system.
It is THE number one thing people get wrong and complain about content being too hard or this Warframe or weapon being rubbish.
(This guide does go under some slight revisions from time to time)

✔ Warframe is more of a looter shooter type of game that also is a sandbox in a sense (NOT an actual sandbox) in where you are free to decide what you want to do, how you want to do it, when you want to do it, and the game gives you tons of tools to work with. However, it is mostly a grind heavy game, so it is not going to be for everyone and does require being somewhat patient. New players especially will want to be constantly setting goals for themselves, even if they seem hard or impossible to reach because you are free to decide on what you want to do and how you want to persue it
✔ Pay to Win doesn’t exactly exist in the game. Here is why, the game is mostly PvE and you aren’t really going to “win” against anything by purchasing every frame or weapon for yourself anyways. Because even if some wallet warrior does end up buying all of the frames and weapons with plat (which no one should do EVER) then they would also need to understand how to properly mod their frames and weapons which they probably won’t understand how to do and copying/pasting builds from someone else DOES NOT teach them anything, plus they would be taking away the grind & fun away from their entire game which would leave them to be bored or quit eventually. Also, any Free to Play player can easily earn pretty much most everything in the game (with some exceptions) that any wallet warrior would get themselves by working hard and grinding for the stuff that they want but expect to be at the mercy of RNG at times
Player Trading also exists in the game where players can sell ingame items to other players to earn platinum for themselves, which also opens up many, many options for Free to Play players only in where they can just do a lot of grinding and farming then make themselves plat to buy whatever they need like cosmetics and such. Player trading is unlocked at Mastery Rank 2 and for new players using https://warframe.market/ is the ideal solution for price checking & selling items but you can use https://nexus-stats.com/ to get an idea of baseline prices on the ingame Trade Chat
✔ Very often new players tend to make the “mistake” in thinking there are best Weapons & Warframes when this isn’t the case, at all. Unlike other games where you progress by getting new better weapons in Warframe’s case it is more about mod progression and using those mods to build upon your foundation which is your equipment. Most weapons and warframes have their own things they excel in and some things excel better in other departments than others, but they do have their uses but many of them are viable even for late game content.
More veteran players will understand that each frames have their own roles that they fulfill for certain mission types and will use those to help their squad or do the mission solo with. It is important that you find what you enjoy using and find things that cater to your playstyle. Also, crowd control abilites are something that new players tend to overlook as they are very powerful in Warframe and can make things easier for yourself and others in your squad
Basic mods that you should be focusing on getting and ranking up: Serration, Vitality, Steel Fiber, Redirection, Intensify, Streamline, Flow, Stretch, Hornet Strike, and Pressure Point. Learning how damage works will be very important to know early on and even later on in the game: http://warframe.wikia.com/wiki/Damage_2.0
✔ Use the 50 starting platinum to get warframe/weapon slots as this will let you hold more weapons and warframes respectively. You can purchase more slots by going to your Inventory after you press Escape in your Orbiter then going to Warframes or Weapons respectively. This is always recommended as a new player so that you can acquire more weapons/warframes and be able to have room for them
✔ Start getting familiar with the movement and parkour mechanics, as they are useful to do and also help in surviving or preventing things like getting knocked down/taking less damage. Learning this early is better than having to learn it late in the game: http://warframe.wikia.com/wiki/Movement#Sprinting
✔ Quite a lot of cosmetics can be earned through alerts (missions that popup for certain interval of time then disappear afterwards), special events, or Baro Ki'teer this does allow for new players to be able to get things to start looking cool without having to pay a single cent. Also, there are also 'free' perma (costs 1 credit) color palettes that come every major holiday that you can get in the ingame Market or they may give some out for free for special events
✔ Always rank things to 30 before selling them and be sure to try out new weapons/warframes to get an idea of what you may like, also make sure to check if the weapon can be used to make another weapon: http://warframe.wikia.com/wiki/Weapons_Required_as_Crafting_Ingredients
✔ Complete the starting story quests to be able to get most of the functionality for your ship (various other things may become unlocked as you finish certain story quests or other methods): https://www.warframe.com/game/questguide
✔ Joining a new player friendly clan is advised. Not only do clans offer new friends to potentially meet, but they also offer various clantech research that you can get the blueprints of if they have researched it via credits to be able to craft that said item/warframe/weapon for yourself
✔ If you see a Nitain Extract alert be sure to do them whenever you do! This will save you so much time later on in the game when you have to craft a lot of Warframes/Weapons that require them. Doing the alerts whenever they popup means that you will be better prepared
✔ Always be sure to practice your Mastery Rank tests before doing the actual test itself! This can be done by going to any relay then pressing Esc(ape) then clicking Fast Travel then Cephalon Simaris. After getting there, there will be a hallway on your right then there will be some floating mastery rank badges that are there. Find the one that is for your next or current rank then click on Practice and keep doing it until you feel comfortable enough to actually pass. This will save you a lot of time and frustation, because whether you pass or fail your mastery rank test you will have to wait 24 hours before you can do it again / retry
✔ Mastery Rank doesn’t show how good you are but should be somewhat of an indicator of how much a person SHOULD know up to that point, however that is not always the case because there are some people who are a high Mastery Rank and don’t know what they are doing. MR does show how much you’ve collected and leveled things though
✔ When you eventually reach sorties these are a series of missions that test your knowledge of the basic mission type itself and hacking. Make sure you get a basic understanding of the mission type, hacking, and general mechanics of the game before doing them to save yourself a lot of trouble
★ Avoid using region chat. This is primarily because it is the most heavily modded chat and if you end up saying a "chat banned" word then you can be chat banned for 7 days, it can be toxic sometimes, and some of the human moderators can be pretty ban happy (which is something DE needs to fix). If you DO need help then use recruitment chat instead it is a way better option because there are people that are willing to help you by taxi'ing you to that planet (taxi meaning that you or they join the same squad then they select a mission node on a planet) or for an alert/invasion/etc or will answer any questions you might have
★ DLCs for Warframe are more of a "starter pack" thing they DO NOT unlock any new content in any shape or form, but everything in it can be easily farmed ingame if you are patient enough. However, if you wish to purchase platinum to also support the developers then it is advised for you to wait for a 75% discount from daily login then purchase platinum that way since you get a lot more out of your money that way
★ Don't worry about the 'meta' just use whatever you like and try experimenting with things then level those things to get Mastery Rank experience. You don't even need specialized builds for warframes or weapons until after you finish the Star Chart anyways
★ In certain mission types such as Survival, as a new player DO NOT run around and use all of the life support capsules because that is a waste for you & everyone else and it is annoying (might be considered trolling to some people). Life support capsules are something that you use when your life support is low below 40% (30 - 35% would be a bit more ideal).
In Spy missions it is important to be stealthy and to avoid being detected, just charging in and killing things can ruin the mission especially if you do it in the data vault room. Look around when you get to the data vault area and look for various shortcuts to get into the actual data vault room where you need to hack the console
★ Early on for new players it's alot better to do Dark Sector missions which are always against Infested enemies to get Credits and Affinity (experience): http://warframe.wikia.com/wiki/Dark_Sector
★ You can only earn Mastery Experience from a level 30 item ONCE, re-leveling it WILL NOT give you further mastery experience and you will have to craft new stuff in order to obtain more. Items such as a MK1-Braton and a Braton are considered separate for mastery experience. Mastery experience carries over to the next one (and so forth) if you are currently leveling stuff and are already full of exp to your current rank
★ You can mark things such as mods or resources with 'G' (default key) or mark a specific point of interest that you would wish for people to check out or even marking a specific enemy for players to focus on. For instance if you see a green streak where an enemy or group of enemies were at then you can use 'G' to mark that specific resource for people to come pick up
★ You can assign items to your Gear Wheel by going to your Arsenal. Then when you're in a mission use 'Q' (default key) to open your Gear Wheel then selecting which item you wish to use, this is useful since you will eventually use those slots for various consumables or scanners or other goodies
★ You can use a Forma to add another polarity to your weapon/warframe/etc when you put a mod in the same polarity (symbol) slot it will cut that mods cost in half, however when you use a Forma on something it will reset that items rank back to unranked then you have to level it to 30 again. Having multiple Forma on an item means you'll be able to place make use of your mod capacity on that item better and being able to eventually use mods in all of the slots: http://warframe.wikia.com/wiki/Polarization . Just make sure when you are re-leveling your frame that you at least equip Vitality to avoid dying a lot!
★ Orokin Reactors (for your Warframes/Sentinels/Companions) or Catalysts (for your Weapons) are used to double your Mod Capacity on whatever item you're using them on but generally for new players it isn't advised to use them until you have found something that you really like or plan to use for a long time. There are sometimes various alerts or invasion missions (and sometimes events) to be able to get these without having to pay anything, also might come as a sortie reward depending on your RNG
★ You can use Endo ( http://warframe.wikia.com/wiki/Endo ) to upgrade your mods. Endo is dropped by enemies, can be a mission/bounty reward, sortie reward, coverting duplicate/excess mods to endo, and you can also covert Ayatan Sculptures into Endo at Maroo's Bazaar at Mars
♚ Completing all of the mission nodes on a planet will allow for you to do Nightmare Missions on that planet which are missions that have modifiers but you will get a random Nightmare mod when you complete them. Farming nightmare mods is quite handy and a lot of them are used often and you can even sell them for platinum to people (recommended to use something like https://warframe.market/ to do so)
♚ Do Junctions in order to progress to new planets to be able to fight new bosses which drop Warframe parts (some warframes can come from clantech research or other methods like story quests). Junctions give you rewards from story quests to various blueprints to help you ease into the game more and they also reward you with some Mastery XP
♚ To get an Invasion reward you need to complete three missions for the faction that you are supporting. After the Invasion ends then you will be mailed your reward
♚ Once you have completed all of the star chart then you can look into doing whatever you want and exploring the game much further indepth, such as focusing on more specialized builds for your frames/weapons/etc or whatever you want really. Consider the star chart more of a starting point for new players and completing it means that you are ready to do more advanced things
♚ After completing the star chart then you can use some of the following to get what you need: Akkad (Eris) / Hydron (Sedna) / Bere (Sedna) / Helene (Saturn) / Io (Jupiter) for Affinity farming and the Index for Credit farming (recommended to do Medium Risk since it gives 135k credits and you can use a Credit Booster to double your reward). Elite Sanctuary Onslaught (ESO) for Focus / Affinity farming

(^ Keep in mind since a certain patch that some of the Warframes have switched locations (boss) farming wise with Excalibur being on Mars - new players can now get him early now, Trinity on Pluto, and Frost being on Ceres)
There is going to be a time where you need to stop, get better mods, and rank them up, which costs a lot of grind. All the frames and all the guns in hand won't help if you dont have any good mods to put into them. Fully unlock the early planets to enable nightmare mod missions.
