The characters for 1999 are interesting, and the idea of the protoframes' inherent body horror of trying to not succumb to the Infestation within them is good for storyline writing. The hints were there for character interaction and such, but... not ever really shown or brought out.
To a degree, there is a good thing to leaving things to the reader/watcher's imagination. After all, a good writer tends to give half the details, so the reader's imagination can create the other half. The trick is which parts to show to make up that half.
This whole update just felt like an intro to new factions, which is fine, and I am having fun with the new missions and such, but I really want to know more about the universe we already have. The characters we meet here are supposed to be "Protoframes," but we get no context on that at all, other than how they look.
Since they did go through with this being a new system, with new characters, I hope in the future they delve further into backstories and such to flesh things out a bit more, but I get a feeling that won't happen. It'll likely just be another half-assed attempt at just adding new mechanics and new enemies without anymore development.
