♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ BALLS EVERYWHERE
but in all seriousness, particularly for Defense, I'd say Cephalon Suda's Shield Ospreys work best. You can toss out multiple of them, unlike any other Specter, and they slightly boost both your shields and the pods. Plus their AI generally always dictates them to float right next to the pod.
TL;DR
Don't choose syndicate based on specter. Choose on mods or lore.
I would advise you to read my whole post though.
I do agree, though. Utility is what helps you the most in Defense which would make the Shield Ospreys the number one choice.
I honestly found Specters to be a waste of resources, though so my personal advice is the same as this:
I would add that it is a good idea to check which Syndicate gets along with others and plan ahead so you won't waste standing and make use of synergy. For example going Steel Meridian + Red Veil or Steel Meridian + Arbiters of Hexis + Cephalon Suda et cetera.
There's good information about them on the wiki.
I did. Damn it. Can't even complain properly. I'm too tired. Time for shleeeap.
As for standing-sinks: I used to sell augments for plat and very soon there will be those nifty 25k standing key packages to eat up excess standing.
