Not going to argue that the game might've changed, but DE 'doing anything' to Nidus is not the problem.
Shield gating was added which is probably the most reliable form of survival, and Nidus is completely unable to benefit from it. Plus content has been pushing into higher level territories with Steel Path, Archon Hunts, The Circuit, Deep Archimedia and even 1999 being higher level content, all of which makes health tanking less viable.
Nidus has gotten some tools to help here and there, but his durability doesn't keep up with modern tank frames that shield gate or generate tens of thousands of overguard.
To be fair, HP tanking is still absolutely fine for anything considered 'end game' today. Lavos is my personal fav pick for a lot of this sort of content. HP tanks usually do fine until you hit around 500 or higher, and that's when they start to feel more pressure, but are still just fine.
The largest stigma today I see is that people continually point to level cap content and say that's end game, but realistically the game's just not balanced around it.
The second biggest issue is that half the time, people expect that having a ton of hp is fine without investing in their armor stat, but the two go hand-in-hand.
Shield-gating is just easier to build around with the augur mods and the like, so health tanking just isn't as favorable anymore.
