thing is, the game will not connect anyway, nord has to be turned off completely as split tunnelling is ignored. It is the only game that does this.
And yes people get banned for using VPN, when they are using it circumvent regional pricing. As long as your not buying things with the VPN on, you should be fine.
It would be nice if they would use valves relay network so I dont have to worry about exposing my ip in public missions. Im paranoid and have been internet stalked before.
the main problem, and likely the one that makes warframe difficult for some people who uses nord (or other provider) is likely the high(er) latency which might lead to timeout errors when connecting to the login server and/or later the matchmaking (i just had such host in my last mission - coincidently, also one who used nordvpn ^^)
there aren't many 'real' solutions to the problem other than either moving away or changing either the internet provider and/or vpn service provider.
one vpn provider who is better regarded for gaming is 'ExpressVPN' (or similar in name) - but i never tested them myself, so that's only hear-say...
the short answer is: don't use VPNs at all if you really, really don't need to - and most people don't, even those from china or russia (lol). if privacy is your concern for using VPN, then forget about that - you can easily identify as person by many other ways even with a VPN in use. there are some 'technical' reasons other than privacy (which still IS a reason, just not for gaming in most cases) where one need to use a VPN, but either you shouldn't play games from out of such networks anyway or you'll have to live with the problems its use (or the 'solutions' like switching the provider) will get you.
oh, and yes there are also 'ideas' how to improve connections tunneled through a VPN, but if one has problems with a VPN in the first place AND didn't already know what to do (meaning those who might read this here) they probably shouldn't go mess with any settings themself or risk making thing worse.
