If you want, I can be a personal shopper at the cost of plat since some of you don't want to put in the smallest amount of work to find something you don't want to farm.
The trading relay solely depends on users having to come up to active users with a limited pool of items they can list/sell (showcased in a unoptimised way), and then there's the Warframe Marketplace website:
Whilst the Marketplace site is objectively the best of these options, it's far from ideal either.
You not only need to be online/ingame and actively attentive to buy/sell stuff (rather than a more offhand built-in AH ingame), you can't even effectively use the system when playing the game and doing missions, as if someone reaches out to buy something, you either have to finish your mission or abort it in order to confirm the trade (this makes things like endurance missions, endgame bounties, duviri circuit, and eidolon hunts a risk now, cause of this.
As a seller, you have no real way to compare cost and prices of items sold via a history within the website itself, and no real way to access various buy/sell price information you'd normally see on more common ingame AH's. Not to mention the filter system is rather limited, as you can only look up items based on their name, and not other factors such as price, quantity, categories etc, etc.
Ultimately trading in Warframe is doable, but it's a flawed system. The fact we have to utilise an external site to even bring just a portion or semblance of a reliable AH/Marketplace for the game should speak volumes.
I presume though DE doesn't want to have a built-in AH akin to most modern mmo's cause the currency people are buying/selling with is their premium currency, but that's just a hunch. (Didn't stop Throne and Liberty though)
Unfortunately... that last part - the "The only real argument against it would be that they are intentionally making it inconvenient and annoying to deal with so that veteran players don't bother offloading the carpets of old gear they have" part is the problem that does not yet have a solution.
In short, too many folk have too much stuff stockpiled.
