The main missions outside of the story are PvE with up to 4 players co-op. You can select public matchmaking, friends only, invite only, and solo only.
Pvp takes the form of the conclave, which has 1vall (free-for-all) deathmatch, 4v4 deathmatch and "capture the Cephalon" (CTF), and Lunaro, which is lacrosse, oddly.
But overall, just play to have fun and achieve your progress, however you see fit. It's a fun core gameplay loop, but there's a lot of systems to grind out. Just set goals, work with friends old and new, and be the best Tenno you can be.
I'm playing mostly with the help of Public Matchmaking. Sometimes with friends when I have social energy. Find a clan. There are gear items, weapons and warframes which you can't get unless you join a clan. If you like grinding then you could find your own clan but rooms and equipment may require plenty of resources and for a new player it can be pain in the ass.
Most quests are Solo-only. You are treated as a special Tenno with our story in the universe. Early missions until Jupiter are Co-op that work with randoms or friends.
The rest of the game, from early-game to late is still highly active. Obviously the really old content has a lot less people playing, but you will almost always find at least 1 or 2 people per mission.
As for friends. It's possible, but you won't make friends unless you try. More recently (i.e. the past few years) and especially since cross-play was enabled, people talk in Squad Chat far less. You will often go several missions without anyone speaking a word anymore, whereas it used to be that people would chat all the time and most missions (especially Survival and Defence) you would spend the whole time just talking to each other.
Not so much anymore. It still happens, but sadly a lot of missions are just spent in eery silence while you all just blast your way around.
You can look around for a Clan and join it, but you'll have to hope the players are active and have the same things in mind as you. You might make a friend or two that could show the ropes and help you out... however, my best advice is to try and get existing friends of yours to play Warframe with you.
Honestly, all my best time in Warframe has been spent playing with friends that also play Warframe, not people I met while playing Warframe. Just people that I know and that I play games with, and we just casually co-op in WF and grind together when we feel like it.
Welcome back to the game.
