I prefered Shade and Deth when I started.
I'd take Diriga and/or Carrier/Shade.

Carrier will pick up your loot for you, and comes with a decent shotgun; companions can't use the same mod as your own weapons at the same time, and since most people don't have shotguns all the time, you don't have to worry about duplicate mods.
Dethcube has a fair range, and a spool-up machne gun; it's unique precept is Vaporize, which does radiation damage (+75% damage against some heavy grineer, and some bosses and armored corpus) sufficient to kill an enemy upwards of level 20-25 if the right damage modifier is present.
Shade comes with cloak, which can last indefinately, but can activate in the middle of combat and be wasted. Only activates when Shade has line-of-sight of an enemy, even if you do or don't. Deactivates with most combat actions. Comes with a burst-pistol instead of rifle, so uses pistol mods; it's attack precept is retaliatory instead of aggressive, so Shade only shoots enemies that have already shot you.
Haven't personally used Wyrm; comes with a laser rifle, and a crowd knock-down, which can give you some much-needed breathing room if you get swarmed.
Shade for stealthier play, Dethcube to save your bacon on occasion as you progress on the starchart (even had a lucky Stalker kill from the lil' guy), and carrier for close-range protection and easier loot collection.
If you have access to a clan dojo and research:
Helios will automatically scan targets for your codex if you have scans available in your gear; this mod gets replaced by a mod from simaris that changes scanning to a damage multiplier like Banshee's Sonar. Comes with a Helios-only (all sentinals can use all sentinal weapons, except this one) melee-weapon, with fair status, and much easier to duplicate mods.
Djinn just got a rework on Fatal Attraction; for about 5 seconds at a time, Djinn will glow and all enemies within its range will stop fighting you, stare at the pretty light, and walk towards it; if enough do so at one time, they get blinded for a few seconds after and take a small amount of (not sure anymore, seems to be Viral damage) damage. It's weapon does pure toxin damage, and it's attack precept has the longest range in the game.
If you don't read the wiki, Helios can get you information on what mods drop from which enemies, and which enemies are weak to each damage type.
Djinn is nice if you depend on shields recovering, or if you find yourself surrounded often.
Carrier and Helios.
Helios is in a Guild research but you can easily join a clan to get it.
The rest? Mostly worthless with maybe the exception of Diriga but you need several Forma to make the weapon shine and have a lot of powerful mods.
So don't bother with the rest unless you got the money to spend on them and need that MR rank fodder points.
Good range, decent dmg plus its abilities are DPS. DPS is a sort of 'always effective' thing to go with. I mean the games based around combat so althought tanky, CC, healer stuff is great you do need to kill things.
As far as pet/sent go none are going to carry you but the Cube is pretty good.
The cloaking has saved me multiple times, its helpful on the less tanky classes.
Shades main weapon though is god awful, that can be replaced tho.
If not, can't go wrong with carrier.
I wonder if shade is even remotely viable mid-late game with Vulkok. Sweeper Prime doesn't count, since the whole damn sentinel is OP. Sad thing is, I've gotten way too used to having it around. ;w;
