I suppose another way to look at it is if I have my Primary weapon out, I won't be Winding Claws flying around all over the place. However, if I have my melee weapon out I'll be uncontrollably Winding Claws flying around all over the place.
Same with "e-hold-e-e-e". Press button once or twice (depending on the combo), then, during the animation of the second strike (when the swing simply cannot because animation is going) hold down the button and continue tapping. Eventually you'll get the hang of it. Probably. It took me personally almost a year, but than again - it's really hot inside this ping metal helmet.
Basically, each melee strike animation locks you for a certain duraiton of time (be it half a second or longer, with heavier weapons) into it. During that lock - you can't do anything physically - but game WILL still register what you want to do afterwards. So, let's say, you have medium speed swinging sword with combo that is E E Pause E E E.
To enable this combo, you have to press EE first (game will recognize even fast tapping) and lock yourself into those two first swings. During second swing, wait till it's almost over (ensuring that you got that pause) and then just mash EEEEEE, continuing the combo. I can't really tell you what to do exactly and what to press in what exact milisecond, but I can kinda guide you in the right direction. Learn where animations start and where they end (roughly) and practice. It will come with enough practice and soon you'll be able to do all kinds of crazy combos.
On PC I try everyu possible combo , pause, tap, right hold etc and never pull a single one off.
So now I just spam E, games basic anyway but wtf the combos are so hard to pull off beats me.
I can do the air smash and thats about it.
Valkyr = mash E win /snooze mode
Hydroid = #4 in doorway by extraction = solo farm /snooze mode
Now if I try to chain Dancing Hunter (EE holdE EE) I sometimes get Winding Claws. I have to stop fighting for a bit in between moves but I know that won't work out well in the middle of a big fight.
Going to practice a bit longer before I give up. Well, for the day.
But in-game, combos are NOT just button press sequences on their own, you have to actually pay attention to the moveset, for example there's a dual dagger combo that has a pause, and you have to press the key again when the frame's foot touches the ground.
To do "Winding claws" you have to press the key again after the second or third "sword whirl" the character does.
What Vulbjorn is saying I can see that as well. Winding Claws shows E x4 after the pause but I'm needing 7 - 9 to actually get the finish where you fly forward with the bang.
Even the basic attack, Raking Flesh, took some trial & error. It's a quick EEEE, stop pressing keys until all animations are done, EEEE. If I paced myself I get the first half of Winding Claws, the flailing arms bit.
Anyways, I'm not going to fight it. I semi have it under control where I can already rely on getting the EEholdEEE. Then Winding Claws will be the default attack LOL. This will only be for Infested since I end up using melee most of the time against them.
