Personally, I find it worth opening just so for being able to solo Circulus or Mot for the absolute best Warframe action. Tons of enemies and a great way to see if gear is up to snuff.
It's worth nothing that the condition for accessing SP is also the condition to access Arbitrations, which are an earlier part of the progression path.
earn Steel Essence, buy Umbra Forma Blue print,Farm Arcane.
and to do that you are actually forced to do the most annoying content ever : new war
so from my point of view : it depends
After acquiring the galvanized mods from arbitrations and maybe some arcanes from Eidolons, having forma'd and potatoe'd your favorite weapons, killed a few liches... Well, after all those power-ups : the regular star-chart won't be much of a challenge anymore.
So the answer is "more farm" to gain more power to be able to "farm more", or so it seems.
In the early Steel Path, it's sort of a "self-contained" challenge : you have to play steel path to get those arcanes drop from acolytes, in order to make steel path easier.
But the "more loot" modifiers... : the "rewards" aren't that rewarding since you probably already have all the mods obtainable through direct drops and enough ressources to sustain your needs by the time your account is "end-game enough" to farm it.
You play Steel Path for the sake of playing more Warframe. So that's just it.
