Depends on how much plat you want to spend trading for all the weapon arcanes and adapters it gives you. Much of the higher tier content is scaled to steel path, if not literally steel path, and the arcanes you get basically exist to let your weapons scale up to that level of content.

Most of the endgame things like good arcanes and incarnons come from Steel Path, so realistically once you're done with the star chart you'll be doing things in SP most of the time.

Was in the same boat as you, took a break for around four years and came back needing to finish the starchart AND railjack and necramech systems, and I can say Steel Path is pretty important especially when it comes to Incarnon weapons and pushing your build to the limit but also unimportant for any of the story stuff.

Personally, I find it worth opening just so for being able to solo Circulus or Mot for the absolute best Warframe action. Tons of enemies and a great way to see if gear is up to snuff.

It's part of the progression, you don't need to be in a hurry to get there, but play the game long enough and you'll get to doing SP.
It's worth nothing that the condition for accessing SP is also the condition to access Arbitrations, which are an earlier part of the progression path.

I'm at the point where I'm not ready for steel path, but I have to play steel path in order to get the arcanes to be ready for steel path. I usually can't solo the steel path "stalker" because I run out of ammo.

0/10 there is no point whatsoever to it, its there to keep itself intact.....its at most a time saver but because you have to spend a LOT of time getting to a power level to rush through it like you do any other normal mission...its actually not a time saver at all

to reach steel path you need to finish every freaking planet node (and yes , the zariman get treated as a "planet" even when it isnt)
and to do that you are actually forced to do the most annoying content ever : new war
so from my point of view : it depends

"Important"... Depends on what you expect from the game, and how much time you're willing to spend on it.

After acquiring the galvanized mods from arbitrations and maybe some arcanes from Eidolons, having forma'd and potatoe'd your favorite weapons, killed a few liches... Well, after all those power-ups : the regular star-chart won't be much of a challenge anymore.

So the answer is "more farm" to gain more power to be able to "farm more", or so it seems.

In the early Steel Path, it's sort of a "self-contained" challenge : you have to play steel path to get those arcanes drop from acolytes, in order to make steel path easier.

But the "more loot" modifiers... : the "rewards" aren't that rewarding since you probably already have all the mods obtainable through direct drops and enough ressources to sustain your needs by the time your account is "end-game enough" to farm it.

You play Steel Path for the sake of playing more Warframe. So that's just it.
