Yes, there is a choice later in the game to define your character (Quest Second Dream).
The warframes aren't characters but gear. Yet, each of them has a gender.

was trying to judge for your hour of palytime since your pfp is private seems like you only have either below a hundred or 100-200 hours of play time just saying you do know half of the frames a female and you can just customize your operator

About half the Warframes are female, so you should have no problem finding one that suits you.

Without spoiling the story. You start with a choice to play as one of three warframes and figure that you can use others as well. Lorewise you transition your mind into a warframe. While doing that, you are the warframe. No command thing or such. Then when the Quest Second Dream starts, you will realise that there is more behind the curtain.

Frames don't have a gender. They aren't people, and if you pay attention, there's no way a person could fit into many of them. But you will be able to play as and fully customise your operator.

Within the game's setting, they have gender, and they were technically alive. For example, Lotus refers to Mirage as "her" instead of "it" during her quest.
