something you eat?
1) For utility, Part ONE - you can use the whole record-rewind mechanic to speed up such stuff like killing the Necrimate in Netracells, then just rewinding back to the circle without having to manually running back. That is, of course, if the Necramite spawns at around 100-300m from you, rather than the occasional... 700m+ lol. And if you don't want to rewind - just hold it and cancel it out, to not get forcefully returned to your starting location;
2) For utility, Part TWO - use her augment, toggle 4th... Boom. Now your shrapnel mines(1st) and turrets(2nd) armor-strip. And if you have a whole lot of innate STR(mods+arcane+snapshotting of Operator buff+snapshotting of Tome buff+archon shards) + use the 4th with that +100% Str bonus from her passive rotation... Enemies will all be fully armor-stripped in a blink of an eye. Possibly literally on the 1st hit of the shrapnel mine/turret, but 99.9% of the time on 2nd hit for sure fully armor-stripped and dead to slash procs and heat procs... and your weapon damage, of course, if you're feeling extra generous on top;
3) For survivability - you simply CAN'T die while the 4th ability is up. Even if you literally forget to keep up your overshield regen satelities(1st), enemies chew through your shield, keep you under fire through the shield-gate pause, then eat through your HP pool... As long as the 4th ablity was active, all that's gonna happen is you'll be just forcefully rewind back to your starting location, away from harms way. Because that's how/where you normally have to start her 4th. Sure, you will be knocked down/ragdolled for a sec(and then a quickgetting up animation) and your health will be at 5%... But everything else? Ammo, energy and shields, as well as even combo counter? That will be properly rewind, like if it was a normal rewind instead of a forceful rewind due to lethal damage. So just cast your overshield regen satelites and heal up from the Uber-health-orbs from the Dispenasry(3rd). You literally can't die, while her 4th is active.
...And that's already on top of how her 1st(overshield regen satelites) actually interact with shields/shield-gate mechanic in the first place, giving you insane survivability even BEFORE 4th ability is taken into account.
Because you see... Overshield regen satelites(1st) give you constant non-stop shield-to-overshield regen, even under heavy fire. Base starchart + starting points of SP will not be able to break through that constant shield/overshield regen in the first place. So as long as you keep those satelites on you and your team, everyones immortal and who needs Overguard anyway. Next up... In further levels, long endurance runs and "level cap stuff", enemies will already be able to actually outdamage that regen and kill of your shield, leading to shield-gate being triggered. What happens next is also fun. You see... IF the satelite was fully active when the enemies damaged you enough to force a shield-gate... The satelite gets destroyed. It sacrifices itself to give you double the shield-gate duration. With even base Redirection(let alone Prime) in your build, Protea's shield-gate is 2.5sec. IF her shield-gate is being triggered while the shield-regen satelite is still active... you get literal 5 saeconds of shield-gate. Yup. THE ONLY OTHER Warframe who's capable of pushing shield-gate grace period beyond the base 2.5sec of all other frames... is Hyldrin. The Shield-maiden herself! And even then she only has 3.5seconds instead of 2.5seconds! While Protea can have 5.0seconds! Best part? This also applies to allies! The shield-regen satelite can double the shield-gate for them as well. And if they have enough shields on their side to have a 2.5sec shield-gate innately on their own, under Protea's shield satelite protection they'll also get 5-sec shield-gate instead.
That's like... Literal eternity for you to react to this predicament. Be it by once again casting the shield-regen on yourself(and teammates) and regen back to full-and-overshield in a blink of an eye, thus RESETTING the shield-gate again... Or just cast her 4th, which instantly gives you 3sec i-frame on the initial cast itself. Plus you're also fully invulnerable while in the rewind animation too - be it when the timer runs out, you trigger rewind earlier manually OR you're being forcefully rewind back by getting lethal damage(as explaiend further above in the first place), so... Yeah.
Protea can't die, if you use her right. Can't die, helps teammates to not die as well, provides energy, hp and ammo(even for arch-guns!), while stripping armor(with augment) AND dishing out real good damage. She's a "Jack of all trades... master of all too".

I don't want to play Protea with the boring meta turret setup, that's why I stopped playing her before. I want to make big boom with 4.
We'll just go play and have fun. And you can be a downer all you want. :)
And if you want "big boom with 4" - try Xaku. That one does exactly that. A big explosion of body parts with 4th ability. Or try Garuda, with augment for her 4th too - also a big AOE boom around her, just slash-based. Or go for Qorvex, who also can do some real good AOE big boom-boom-boom chain reaction with his four. Or, I dunno... Use an explosive AOE weapon to make big booms - perhaps pair with Mag to bundle enemies together for even bigger ka-boom and lots of death \o/
There are many options for you. Protea's 4th ability though... is not really that. Because the explosion is a cherry on top, not the "main thing". The main thing is utility and survivability.
OH AND BTW... Last Devstream, Pablo said that there will be a rework of some elements soon-ish... And Blast is included. So we'll have to wait and see. For now though? Protea's 4 is not the "big boom" you expect it to be. Sorry.
every frame should have at least 1 ability that is either unusable or otherwise doesn't really contribute to the kit so you can subsume it away, and protea's 4 is PERFECT for that
I run Pillage bc it's super easy to hit 400% power str with Protea's passive so you can armor strip massive areas very easily, sets up easy kills for your 1 and 2 which you can effectively spam infinitely even at min efficiency with the power of Dispensary + Equilibrium
Protea is one of the few frames who really don't need any subsumes, as their own full kit is self-sufficient and in no need of external "additions", while having a use for all four abilities fully. Other examples would be Gauss, Octavia or Voruna.
It's even worse in non-endless missions as it just reverts you backwards when you need to be heading towards something typically. Whereas Pillage or even just Roar would work everywhere.
But hey, you do you. We're all allowed to play how we like. That's why we play Warframe - for the customization and options given to us, ya know?
I tried several subsumes... But then returned to base kit and never looked back.
Energy is irrelevant too, you can just take equilibrium and have infinite health and energy restores via dispensary.
Her 4 isn't ideal for endgame steel path where enemies are level 250-400 and have 300% health. Nor is it ideal for any kind of mission types where you need to run forwards constantly rather than defend a target.
As you say, you can play however you prefer though. At lower levels, fun trumps min-maxing for sure. I switch builds all the time outside steel path.
