Ranting about shards
I love this game. But I often find that I'll see a thing, and think "Wow, that'll be really good!" And I get it, start trying it out, then talk to people and do some more research and, come to find out...it's actually just straight up bad.

Today's episode: Topaz Archon Shards. I thought, given the other crit buffs available to us, and the fact that we need to fuse two other shards to get it, AND the fact that we have to kill 50 enemies to get the full buff, that 50% crit chance buff MUST be an absolute buff, right? I mean, this is an endgame item and you gotta do some real work to get it, and it's taking a spot that could be used to increase health or armor by 250, or increase our ability strength or whatever.

No... no... the bonus is additive. Which means on my ocucor, at max with one shard, I get... 8%.
For two archon shards and 50 kills I gain...8% crit chance. When I have a mod that gives me more than that from a single kill, and over 4 times that at 4 kills. When we have several mods that give more than that with no prerequisites - just equip the mod. And of course, DE doesn't bother to tell us in-game whether a buff will be additive, multiplicative, or absolute. Hell, from what people tell me, a lot of the time you can't even trust the Armory screen to actually tell you the truth about the damage you do.

It's just really disappointing... rant over, but feel free to rant about stuff as well if you feel you need a place to do so.

I didn't expect it to give flat 50% crit. That would make weapons insane and other shards and their options pointless.

I can undestand the frustration here. I'm doing careful research because I have done similar mistakes in the past too.

The title was pretty clear. If you didn't wanna see it someone complaining about shards, you shouldn't have clicked on it.

So like, you expected to get red crits on all weapons with one shard?
Yeah maybe it's good Nukor gets to stay good instead of be pushed to literal best in slot by far position and then needing a hardcore nerf to make it unusable.

No I didn't expect to get red crits on all weapons with one shard. a 50% flat crit buff wouldn't make that happen, nowhere close, and it only works on secondary weapons anyway. But I did expect the shard to be worth using, given what we have to do to get it, and what we would be using it instead of.
A 50% additive crit buff after 50 kills is friggen worthless, it's a waste, especially compared to what else we could be using. Damn, somebody wishes something was a little less useless, and the community acts like they're demanding an instant-win button.

tbh all the shards effects aren't "that" impressing if you think about it.. but they're great to round out a build..

i'm still amazed that ppl thought it's flat crit chance....

but let's be positive, the shield recovery on blast proc can make you border line invinceble

You know what else was considered 'endgame?' Archon hunts.

How long did it take for that to be broken down into an inconsequential grind? Same with Netracells?

As for the shards, they're shiny and most players like shiny things.

Edited due to forgetting Netracells were a thing.

Yeah...sad but true...

non of this matters, its honestly the devs and the gamers destroying their own game.

This game has no challenge, it only has numbers flying about and ways to create bigger numbers but then also ways to create enemies that require even bigger numbers, rince and repeat for the next decade....fantastic.

Cool story.

It's 75% on a Tauforged, unless you can't do Tauforged fusion and the wiki is just automatically filled.
Going over 80% and slapping on Creeping Bullseye on a status weapon already gets you quite close to red crits, with other arcanes and mod setups from other gear being able to greatly contribute.

This was the idea. Not powercreep player through the roof even more but as small buffs... or so I read in the Official forums when people complain shards being too weak. Personally I appreciate these shards because now my Trinity has +75 DR Blessing without mods and I can concentrate on other areas of hers.

The lack of common sense can be astounding sometimes. Making a small few weapons with very low crit chance suddenly crit-viable without using a single mod slot/arcane would be game breaking. Not only do many of the low-crit chance weapons have high crit damage to compensate (so having reliable crits would just push consistent dps to way high numbers), but it would make it far too easy to have orange/red/red+ crits on many other weapons that already have decent crit chance. It just wouldn't be easy to balance in the slightest. Archon shards are in addition to mods. We only had "just our mods and arcanes for years", so ANY bonus we can add is a valuable one. It doesn't have to completely change your gameplay or change how a weapon is meant to be used
